SawitA (Part I)


In May 2011 ago, I attended a joint program of Department of Food Science and Technology IPB and PT SMART TBK, titled

 
Utilization Provitamin A in Red Palm Oil to Overcome Lack of Vitamin  A in Indonesia


In this program, i’ve a role as one of facilitators. The number of facilitators in this program is 37 students at level S1 (Bachelor), S2 (Master), and S3(Doctor), to be placed in the village around Campus IPB Dramaga -Bogor.

A vision of this program is to overcome vitamin A deficiency with several missions undertaken, such as, educates people about the important benefits of vitamin A, makes people aware that taking vitamin A is important for health, provides assistance in the form of red palm oil as a source of pro -vitamin A.

These missions ran by facilitators who have been trained. Basicly, facilitators were given sufficient knowledges about the benefits of vitamin A, red palm oil, and procedures for communicating with the respondents.

The program ran from May 22 until July 26, 2011, call it SawitA Program. I and 4 of my friends (Kornelia Rismarini,  Nurul 
Hidayati Azizah, Nur Sofia, and Euis Fujiarti) placed in Neglasari. The village is located quite far from campus IPB Dramaga, and can be reached by public transport as much as 2 times, Bubulak or Laladon Terminal destination, then public transport Cibeureum destination.

Before the program began, we visited the village to meet the village head and looking for potential respondents for this program. Because this program is an assistance program of PT SMART TBK, the selected respondent was a pre-prosperous families (that is, poor families). Each facilitator has a cluster and each cluster consists of 50 respondents from several pre-prosperous families. Another criterion of the selected respondents were women over the age of 2 years up to seniors who can still talk to. The reason is women and child who generally suffer vitamin A deficiency In Indonesia (Source: a, b)

From the 6 Pillars of Residents in the village, we chose one of them (RW 03) to ease in running the program. The selection of respondents done by screening based on data owned  by cadres who appointed by the Village Head; Mrs. Yani and Mrs. Kurniasih. During the program, they gave a lot of help and contributions. After the screening, we visited the candidates of respondents.  
 Besides to seeking information about their economic circumstances, we also invited them to be our respondents.

The next step is finding the data about their basic knowledges about vitamin A and red palm oil. The results are all respondents do not know the CPO, never eat red palm oil, and do not know the benefits of red palm oil. Most of them just know that source of vitamin A is only carrots.

It has to concerned seriously.

My first motive is only to run the program till finished, but after i met them (my respondents actually), a sense of responsibility as a student of Food Science and Technology- appeared.

All selected respondents were invited to attend a first mass meeting, on May 22, 2011. And incidentally, that day was my birthday. It was nice to celebrate my birthday by doing something useful :)

First mass meeting consisted of gymnastics in the morning, sharing information about SawitA (brand name of red palm oil), cooking demonstrations using SawitA, distributed incentives and SawitA to all respondents.This meeting wasnt run well. Actually, that was the first time we did it. Our mistakennes at the meeting caused of less coordination with the respondents, respondents data that has not been fixed, and the inefficiency of procedures for distribution of incentives, so we were overwhelmed by the participants was not listed as a SawitA respondent.

Second Mass meeting held on June 19, 2011 ran smoothly. This activity is held on SDN II Neglasari. Generally, the meeting consisted of  the same contents with first meeting. The difference was red palm oil was distributed is SawitA Gurih.

Third mass meeting held on July 26, 2011 also ran smoothly. This activity consisted of 
SawitA -cooking contest, post-test (to determine respondents' understanding about SawitA program), cooking demonstrations using Presto Cooker and Blender, and also distributed incentives. This meeting is the most interesting meeting.

During this program, the facilitator is also required to fill in five questionnaires in predetermined time. The questionnaire consists of five forms. Each form contains different questions. Questionnaires completed by interviewing respondents.


In 3 months, I got a lot of experiences. One of them is how to be grateful for everything we have. There are still many people in need. Many woman quited their school at elementary school. They have been married and have many children. They are no longer able to enjoy  their youth. The majority of respondents live in rented houses or very small huts. But they can still be grateful for whatever they get and have. In addition, I also get so many prayers and the strength from the respondents.

3 months was so meaningful.

I became more spirit to face life and reaching goals. Hopefully my little step can draw a smile on their faces. When i was child, I dreamed of traveling the world to gather smiles from people I visited.

It’s not just a talk :)


Somehow, i wanna start to write about a little dream,

food analysis lecture.

Days a go, when i was goofing off w/ my friend, 
i said : “I wanna be like Prof. Dedi Fardiaz”.

Oh c’mon, it’s all talk, you can check my midtest’ score out. 
I scored the worst.

Prof. Dedi Fardiaz.
He’s a hell of lecture, i swear. 
He’s a simple man and really something.
Yes, he’s one of great lectures in
Food Science and Technology Departement
Bogor Agricultural University.

By the way,
Someday, he teached us about Spectroscopy IR.
There is IR spectrum like tachycardia.
At the time, he explained that soooooo simplyyyyyyy. 
OH GOD. There was somethin’ wrong, haha :D (wondering)

After class, when i reviewed that chapter,  actually blank :D
Then, I tried hard to understand how read the spectrum, 
and finally i got it basicly (super basicly  :P), like in 6 hours :D

Generally, IR spectrum is divided into 3 regions.


1. The Functional Group Region, 4000-1300 cm-1 ­.

The C-H stretching bands occur in the region of 3300 to 2800 cm-1 , sometimes it’s not attended :P

The O-H and N-H stretching frequencies fall in the 3700 to 2500 cm-1 region,with various intensities

The absorption bands at the 2700 to 1850 cm-1 region usually come only from triple bondssuch as CºC at 2260 to 2100 cm-1CºN at 2260 to 2220 cm-1

The absorption bands at 1950 to 1450 cm-1 region, usually come from double bondssuch as C=O stretching bands are strong and occur at 1870 to 1550 cm-1


2.  The Fingerprint Group Region, 1300-910 cm-1 ­.

This region strongly indicates purity of compound.
Detailed interpretation of IR bands in this region is difficult.
For example, esters’ not only show their carbonyl C=O stretch
at 1750 to 1735 cm-1, but also exhibit their characteristic absorption at 1300 to 1000 cm-1 from the couplings of C-O and C-C stretches.

3.  The Aromatic Group Region, 910-650 cm-1 ­.

This region do not necessary come from aromatic compounds, 
but amines and amides also contribute in this region.
